Alternative four-piece Prowles bring a sinister fairy tale to life with heavy guitars and an animated music video…
It is hard not to have respect for bands that swim against the tide. Manchester four-piece, Prowles, are the sort of band that deserves such respect. Although the band may not be breaking new ground, their dark take on Alternative rock is in stark contrast to the feel-good indie currently in vogue, giving guitar music a much needed new lease of life.
‘High Breed’ (listen below), the band’s debut single, captures the best of what makes the band stand out. Employing an expert use of dynamics and twisted lyricism, the track harks back to 90’s era grunge in both fragile and fierce fashion.
Opening with subtle, echo-chamber guitars before setting itself alight, the track blends the calm with the storm, creating an atmosphere of paranoia that looms throughout. The songs animated music video, too, reinforces this impression, distorting the fable of Little Red Riding Hood to sinister effect, all the while the listener is pursued down shadowy avenues and around dark corners.
All in all, this debut comes from a band that knows how to draw in a listener whether he is willing or not, and with a chorus like that, it is destined to become an anthem.
